Royal Palace

To visit it is to discover the history of Spain. It was constructed in the 18th century in the centre of the capital by order of Philip V. It is the official residence of the King and Queen of Spain. Currently they do not live there and only use it for special events. Inside there are frescos, 16th-century tapestries, Chinese porcelain and stringed instruments made by Stradivari. There is also a collection of works by Velázquez, Goya, Rubens, El Greco and Caravaggio. The collection of the Royal Armoury is one of the most important of its kind. Among the rooms in the palace are the Hall of the Halberdiers, the Hall of Mirrors and the Throne Room. The Sabatini and Campo del Moro gardens are among the other major attractions. On Wednesdays you can see the fascinating changing of the Palace guard.
