Nerja Caves

During your visit you'll feel like you're travelling to the centre of the Earth, in a place that combines its own natural beauty with that of its cave paintings. The only part open to visitors is the area known as Galerías Bajas. Every year its Sala de Ballet ('Ballet Chamber') is the venue for the International Music and Dance Festival which commemorates the discovery of the cave. What can you see on your visit? This cave is a place where you'll find almost all known types of natural formations. One of the most spectacular chambers is the one known as Cataclismo, where you'll see the imprint left by an earthquake that occurred in the area 800,000 years ago. You can see representations of symbols and animals in the Sala de los Fantasmas, and a display case with human remains in the entrance chamber. Note that the 589 examples of cave art it contains are not on view to the public for conservation reasons.
