El Tránsito synagogue

Description

This is the a popular name for the synagogue of Samuel ha-Leví, the finest example of Hispanic Jewish art. The synagogue is ornately decorated with a combination of geometric forms, Hebrew inscriptions and floral and plant motifs. Its most emblematic spaces include the Great Prayer Room, the Women's Gallery, the North Courtyard and the Garden of Memory. The Prayer Room is the site of the wall of Hejal, a place of worship with the Holy Ark containing the legal scrolls. The Garden of Memory still conserves some ancient gravestones. The Women's Gallery has large windows to allow women to follow the religious rites, as they were required to be separated from men throughout.
