Sagunto Castle

Description

Sagunto Castle covers an area almost one kilometre in length. It is a fortress surrounded by walls and divided into seven squares with amazing panoramic views of the area. Opposite the entry to the Castle is an underground area housing a prison. Of note is the Santa María de Magdalena square and the bailey, the oldest area. This area includes the remains of the town moat, religious and public buildings and a cistern know as "of the twenty-one pillars" carved into the rock. A number of civilisations have passed through here: Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Christians. It has been declared a National Monument.
