One of the highlights is the Roman bridge across the river, which is 200 metres long and has an honorary arch dedicated to the Emperor Trajan. The other important monuments you can see in the city were build by the Order of Alcántara, including the churches of Nuestra Señora de Almocóvar and San Pedro de Alcántara. The Order has a religious and administrative centre entitled San Benito de Alcántara, consisting of a convent, a church and guest quarters. Nature and active tourism The nearby reservoir of Alcántara is the perfect place for outdoor leisure activities. Located at the foot of the Sierras of San Pedro and Gata, surrounded by forests of cork trees and holm oaks, it's the ideal destination for a range of water sports, hiking and horse riding routes. Anglers will find some areas along the banks of the Tagus that are good for fishing. Gastronomy Delicious dishes featuring particularly pulses, pheasant and partridge. Make a point of trying the river tench and the wines from the Ribera del Guadiana Designation of Origin.
