What to see A good idea is to follow the seafront promenade. This will take you to the Charco de San Ginés –beside the church of the same name– consisting of a type of lake formed by the entry of seawater. It has a charming maritime atmosphere, with fishermen's houses and a tiny fishing fleet. This is a good place to sample grilled butterflied 'vieja' (a typical local fish). The town is known for its defensive architecture, of which the castles of San Gabriel and San Javier are two fine examples. The second houses the International Contemporary Art Museum, with works by artists like Picasso, Miró, Chillida and Tàpies. Active tourism The most highly recommended beach in Arrecife is El Reducto, with its broad stretch of sand. It is very popular with windsurfers and sailors. Near Arrecife you'll find Costa Teguise, one of Lanzarote's main tourist centres. If you like golf, you'll find a golf course here where you can play.
