What to see One of the city's highlights is the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum, a spectacular construction clad in titanium panels by the architect Frank O. Gehry. On the interior you can see an important collection of artworks in its permanent collection, in addition to other works shared with New York and Venice in the most extensive and important private collection of modern and contemporary art in the world. What's more, Bilbao is home to another of Spain's top art galleries, the Museum of Fine Arts, containing works by Gauguin, El Greco, Goya and Zuloaga among others. Apart from the Guggenheim, other architectural creations that will make an impression include the Euskalduna Conference Hall and Auditorium, Norman Foster's underground stations, the airport by Calatrava and the towers designed by Arata Isozaki and César Pelli. And for a complete contrast, a stroll around the old quarter known as the Siete Calles ('Seven Streets') will reveal a series of mansions, religious buildings and monuments like the church of San Antón, Plaza Nueva square, the cathedral and the Arriaga theatre, inspired by the Paris opera. Gastronomy Here gastronomy is an art. If you come to Bilbao you must definitely sample its famous 'pintxos': miniature gourmet canapés to delight even the most demanding palates. The common practice is to go from bar to bar so you can try the greatest possible number of 'pintxos'. If you're lucky enough to be in the city between May and June, you'll be there in time for the annual 'pintxo' contest, where a prize is awarded to the year's best.
