A visit to this World Heritage city is like taking a trip back in time. As you walk through its cobbled streets you'll be surrounded by medieval houses-fortresses and Renaissance palaces. Get your camera ready to capture the towers overlooking the historic quarter.Read more...

What to see The first thing to see is the large Plaza Mayor square bustling with life, and from where you can go into the city within the walls through the Arco de la Estrella gateway. A short walk will take you to mansions such as the Los Golfines de Abajo and the Casa de las Veletas (which houses the Cáceres Museum), and the Pro-cathedral of Santa María. Look out for the storks nesting on the towers. It's worth noting that Cáceres and its charming Jewish neighbourhood is part of the Spanish Network of Jewish Quarters. The various Visitor Centres throughout the city will help you to organise your visit. Gastronomy Try some traditional recipes such as 'migas' (fried breadcrumbs with chorizo and bacon), with a wine from the Ribera del Guadiana Designation of Origin, and some of the different types of convent-made sweets and pastries. The sweets from the Convent of San Pablo are particularly famous.
