What to see The 20-metre high Christ of Otero overlooks the entire area from a hilltop offering marvellous views. In the old town, start on Calle Mayor street and head to Plaza Mayor square, the Town Hall and the Church of San Francisco. The pedestrian streets lead to the ‘Bella Desconocida' or Unknown Beauty. Is this a woman? No. It refers to Palencia Cathedral, which one of the largest in Spain, houses the remains of San Antolín and is home to a ‘miracle' well. Another typical picture postcard is the Church of San Miguel. To round off your visit, head to the Diocesan or the Archaeological museums. There are also nature spots along the banks of the River Carrión for a stroll. The Light Trails are offered at weekends in summer: dramatized night-time tours. Trips The Palencia Romanesque route offers over 50 buildings such as the Monastery of Santa María in Aguilar de Campoo. You can also head to Herrera de Pisuerga or Villaumbrales to take a tourist boat along Castile Canal. Gastronomy Roast young lamb and stuffed pigeon are typical dishes.
