What to see The castle overlooking the old quarter. Step back into the Middle Ages and enter the castle via a drawbridge that spans a moat, leading to a huge inner courtyard, the Armoury, Keep and Mews. From the castle, you'll arrive at the old city centre by way of Calle del Reloj, home to one of the most important religious buildings in Ponferrada. Namely, the Renaissance Basilica of La Encina, which has a fabulous Baroque tower. In the lower part of the old city centre stand Hospital de la Reina and the Baroque church of San Andrés, which houses a statue of Christ that pertained to the Knights Templar. There are two important museums. The first is El Bierzo Museum dedicated to the history of the city and the region of which Ponferrada is the capital: El Bierzo. The second is the modern National Energy Museum. On the outskirts, we recommend visiting the church of Santo Tomás de las Ollas. It is a Mozarabic temple built in the 10th century.
