What to see The area's star attraction is El Escorial Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This magnificent building houses a pantheon, a palace and a basilica, as well as various courtyards, fountains, cloisters, towers and over 4,000 rooms. Inside, you'll be amazed by the impressive dome of the Basilica, the Royal Courtyard, the fabulous Library, which has a large collection of manuscripts, and the Royal Pantheon containing the tombs of Spanish monarchs from the Houses of Austria and Borbón. You can also visit La Casita del Príncipe, a small palace adorned with tapestries, and La Casita del Infante, another small palace with spectacular views standing amid dehesa pastures known as La Herrería Nature and gardens The area boasts some spectacular landscapes, most notably around Mount Abantos, its pine forests and the La Herrería dehesa pastures. There are also many gardens, such as those pertaining to the monastery, those of La Casita del Príncipe with cypresses and a small waterfall, and those of La Casita del Infante. Gastronomy Authentic Madrid and mountain cuisine such as “cocido madrileño” (a wholesome stew), garlic soup and tripe. And for main course, we recommend trying the char-grilled veal from the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains or some roast lamb.
