What to see One of the main historic attractions is La Casa de los Peraza, located in an area known as Pozo de la Aguada. We also recommend other places of interest such as Plaza Mayor, home to La Asunción church, the centre of the Bay where you can see the perfectly preserved Torre del Conde, and San Sebastián chapel, which is on the outskirts of the town and dedicated to Saint Sebastian, after whom the town is named. Be sure to visit the Columbus Museum House dedicated to the explorer's life and his voyage to America. Nature and active tourism The many hiking and cycling routes are a great way to explore the area around San Sebastián de la Gomera. Garajonay National Park is only about 20 kilometres away and boasts the oldest forest in all of Europe. Gastronomy The local cuisine is different from that of the other islands and includes such dishes as watercress stew and “almogrote” (pasta made from goat's cheese). Festivities One of the most deeply-rooted traditions is what is known as “silbo gomero” (Gomera whistling), a system of communication in which syllables are spelled out by whistling. If you have the chance, be sure to attend one of the exhibitions and competitions that take place here.
