What to see Discover the old town on a stroll through the quiet whitewashed streets that contrast with the unique surrounding lava and ash backdrop. Puerto del Carmen is the largest coastal town in Tías and one its major tourist centres. It offers a wide selection of leisure and tourist activities, alongside modern luxury hotels, shops, residential complexes and even a casino. It also has a marina where you can enjoy any water sport or take boat trips to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura or the islet of Lobos. Beaches The 6-kilometre coastline comprises fine golden sands and small coves that emerge from the rocks. The many beaches include the Playa Grande, Matagorda and Los Picillos – the largest in the area. Festivities The Virgen del Carmen festival in honour of the patron saint of fishermen is held in the first weeks of August and includes different competitions, performances and dances. Gastronomy Make sure you try the excellent seafood and fresh fish from the island before you leave, such as the typical poached or open garlic-roasted ‘vieja’ (rock fish).
