Although it is today an important tourist resort, it originated in the 19th century as a whaling settlement. What to see Start with a bathe on its elegant beach (the longest in the province), or a walk along its seafront promenade adorned with avant-garde sculptures and lined with outdoor terraces and cafés. In the city centre you can visit the Gothic tower of Luzea, the medieval church of Santa María la Real, the Narros Palace and the Portu Palace (on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea). Other cultural options are the Basque Museum of Photography and the Zarautz Museum of History and Art. Adventure tourism and the very best 'pintxos' Zarautz is famous for its waves, which are very popular with surfers. Sound interesting?
