Montseny Nature Reserve

Just 40 kilometres from Barcelona, this nature reserve is well worth visiting. Its bucolic “masías” (traditional country houses) and landscapes have been an inspiration for many artists. The hilltops are said to have been used by sailors as reference points in olden times. Popular outings include walking to the top of ElTuró de l'Home, walks along La Pla de la Calma (a long plateau filled with meadows) and visits to the enormous Cuc chestnut tree (a charcoal-maker once lived inside it) or the megaliths in the Sierra del Arca y los Pinares mountains. What animals can you find there? There is a huge variety of wildlife: Most notably, it is home to the Montseny newt, a species that was only discovered in 2005. What's on offer in the park? Guided tours, trips on horseback, 4x4 routes... and an original visitors' centre where you can learn about old legends concerning local witches and highwaymen.
