Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Reserve

This is the largest protected space on the Mediterranean coast, and has a truly spectacular presentation. A natural space with volcanic origins where you'll find fifty kilometres of coastline, cliffs, moving dunes, reefs and salt marshes. Unspoilt beaches like Mónsul or Los Genoveses are ideal for swimming. And for a good view of the park's landscapes, the best idea is to head for observation points like Las Sirenas, formed of the remains of a volcanic chimney. In antiquity it was the home of Mediterranean monk seals whose sounds, according to legend, were mistaken by sailors for the song of mermaids. What animals can you find there? Steppe birds and emblematic water birds like pink flamingos. What's on offer in the park? This park is always a favourite thanks to the wide range of activities available there: scuba diving, boat tours, bird watching, and one of the most original ideas: star-gazing on the Los Genoveses beach during a nocturnal hike.
