"Castells" This is a tradition in which people create human towers up to a height of between six and ten levels. It is a very popular event, typical of Catalan culture, and has been awarded the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designation. The event is very common in all the festivities in Catalonia. Why is it Cultural Heritage? Because it is a tradition that is over 200 years old, and a symbol of group effort and human creativity. What does it involve? The "castells" usually rise up in a square in front of the main balcony of the town hall to celebrate festivities. It is common for the audience to gather round the base to live this exciting spectacle to the full. Both adults and children take part and the latter are usually on the top level.
